Our Campus

The original buildings of the University were purpose-built as both the residences and teaching facilities of the new institution. Over its lifetime, additional buildings have extended the boundary of the built area of the campus, which sits in the middle of the University Farm, but the extent of these developments has not detracted from the intimate scale of the institution. The low density of the site has also allowed buildings to be of an appropriate scale for their rural environment. An Estate Strategy was developed in 2005 and is periodically revisited by the Board of Governors. Since 2003, capital investments have totalled over £16m. Immediate investment plans amount to a further £8m, for which funding is available, and longer term developments, such as additional residences will amount to a further £10m. Funding for the latter programme is under investigation. The estate is generally in good condition. A small direct labour force is supplemented by external contractors. The estates team is led by a professionally qualified manager, who is responsible for building maintenance, facilities and new developments. A further small direct labour force manages the extensive green spaces spread around the University campus. The University has taken steps to reduce energy use and adopt sustainable practices in resource management and recycling in a wide variety of ways. The institution is one of only 16 universities to be recognised by the Carbon Trust Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme, and has won other awards for its work on sustainability, most recently the THE Award for Sustainable Development for the local sourcing of food in its catering outlets.
